1966 IWC Hand-wound Model Ref. 1214 / Cal. 401
[Dial Design]
This design is emblematic of antique IWC classic dress watches. The dial features a luxurious sunburst finish that emits a delicate sheen, and the cursive "International Watch Co." inscription at 12 o'clock exudes a vintage charm.
The no-date dial highlights the bold applied hour markers at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, achieving perfect symmetry.
Furthermore, the other hour markers are represented by deep lines, as if carved with a chiseling tool, with their sharp cross-sections creating a three-dimensional depth, resulting in a highly elaborate construction.
[Movement and Historical Background]
The harmonious beauty of this design is maximized precisely because it features the Cal. 401, which achieved a slimmer profile.
The movement, Cal. 401, is a renowned caliber that succeeded the legendary hand-wound Cal. 89, featuring a smaller size and higher frequency. Its broadly divided bridge structure showcases IWC's characteristic high technical skill and aesthetic appeal. (It also has the technical background of being a hand-wound, slimmed-down version based on the basic design of the Cal. 85/852 series automatic movement.)
[Operability and Smart Fit]
The crown features the iconic IWC fish logo (5mm diameter). There is minimal wear on the edges, which is common in hand-wound models, maintaining a clean state with high operability. Its slim design allows for smart wear without snagging on shirt cuffs.
This piece is recommended for those seeking a timeless antique dress watch that combines legibility with a refined aesthetic.
Operating Instructions
Manual Winding: Turn the crown upwards in its normal position.
Pulling the Crown: Gently pull the crown out by inserting your fingernail between the case and the crown.
Pulling the crown too hard may cause it to detach. Please pull it out gently.
To prevent the crown from bending, remove the watch from your wrist before operating.
Gentle operation can reduce stress on the crown.
Setting the Time: Pull the crown out and turn it clockwise.
