The "Citizen Crystal Seven" was the first watch in Japan to feature crystal glass. Among these, the "43-jewel" model, the highest grade in the series, was born from the multi-jewel competition of the time.
The name Crystal Seven comes from the crystal glass used for the crystal and "seven" representing the seven days of the week.
At the time, it was the world's thinnest automatic watch with date and day of the week using a "12 1/2 ligne movement (28mm)," and the series became a bestseller.
This is an extremely rare piece, featuring the classic case and dial design of the Crystal Seven, but with a luxurious 43-jewel movement (Cal.5204) inside.
The case is a beautifully shimmering gold-filled (GF) specification. It exudes a vintage charm that sets it apart from stainless steel models, with a profound and elegant allure.
The 43-jewel models, which were the highest grade at the time, are few in number, and finding a gold-filled case in such good condition is not easy to come by.
While most gold-filled cases generally have rounded or worn edges due to years of use, this particular piece shows almost no scratches or wear, and maintains its original thickness and sharp form.
Its most distinctive feature is the use of a "ruby ball" in the bearing part of the automatic rotor. This luxurious design, which utilizes the wear resistance of gemstones, is a masterpiece filled with the passion of Japan's golden age of watchmaking, truly befitting the name of the Crystal Seven series with the most jewels.
The case is a "Para Water" specification, which Citizen announced as the first Japanese-made fully waterproof case at the time. (This refers to its performance at the time; it is not waterproof in its current state.)
The dial features a delicate sunray finish, allowing you to enjoy beautiful luster and shadows depending on how the light hits it.
At the 6 o'clock position, there is the proud inscription "43 JEWELS," which is the identity of this model.
Furthermore, a "star mark" is placed below the crown logo of Seven (7), quietly indicating that it was a high-end line for Citizen at the time.
The "C" mark is engraved on the surface of the crown.
The strap is a Luxor by Di-Modell, a long-established German manufacturer. The supple texture of the crocodile-embossed calfskin further enhances the elegance of the gold-filled case.
This is a special model equipped with the top-of-the-line 43-jewel movement of its time, featuring a date and day of the week calendar display, as well as a manual winding function and a quick-set date function.
Despite being a rare collector's item, its ease of daily use is another reason why this model is so popular.
Condition
This watch has been overhauled.
The gold-filled case has sharp edges and is in excellent condition. There are slight minor scratches due to age, but they do not detract from the vintage aesthetic.
The dial is free of noticeable stains and is in very good condition for a 43-jewel model.
The crystal has faint hairline scratches that are visible depending on the light, but they do not impair visibility. We have left them as they are to preserve the original atmosphere. Please refer to the images (the last one).
Due to its age, this watch is not waterproof. Strict avoidance of humid environments (rainy days, face washing, wearing on hot days with sweat, etc.) is essential.
Furthermore, as it is a precision instrument, please be very careful about strong impacts such as drops, and magnetism (smartphones, PCs, speakers, bag magnets, etc.).
How to Operate
Manual Winding: Turn the crown upwards in its normal position.
Set the day of the week, then the date, then the time, in that order.
Quick-set Day: Pull the crown out two clicks and move the time back and forth between "7:15 PM and 12:35 AM" when setting the time.
1) Move the hands to 12:35 AM (0:35 at night). If the day of the week starts to change, it has crossed "midnight (24:00)". If it doesn't change, it has crossed "noon (12:00)".
2) When the hands are moved to 12:35 AM, the next day of the week will be displayed. Then, move the hands back to 7:15 PM. The watch will be prepared to display the calendar for the next day.
(*When moving the hands back, due to the characteristics of the mechanism, the day display may be slightly misaligned, appearing "half-way." However, this does not affect operation, so please do not worry.)
3) Advance the hands to 12:35 AM again.
(*The current day of the week will be displayed correctly as the hands are advanced.)
Confirm that the day has advanced by one day at 12:35 AM.
By repeating this, you can quick-set the day of the week one by one. Please operate slowly to reduce the strain on the movement.
Quick-set Date: Pull the crown out one click and turn it upwards.
Performing quick-set operations when the watch is between "9 PM and 3 AM" will cause damage.
It is recommended to set the time to around 6 o'clock before performing quick-set operations.
Time Setting: Pull the crown out two clicks and turn it downwards (the second hand does not stop).
