Longines 1967 Vintage Watch Ref. 7839-1
This is a Longines hand-wound wristwatch, Ref. 7839-1, manufactured in 1967. While many slim dress watches feature a two-hand design with only hour and minute hands, this piece is a three-hand model equipped with a gracefully extending central seconds hand. The tips of the long hands, which reach nearly to the edge of the dial, are meticulously curved to follow the gentle arc of the dial—a testament to the elaborate craftsmanship of the era. Furthermore, despite its slim profile, it features a robust screw-back case, a rare and impressive combination that highlights the technical prowess of the time.
The crystal and dial form a gentle curve, creating expressive shadows that change with the light. The dial features a beautiful sunburst finish, emitting a delicate luster from different angles. At the 12 o'clock position, the "LONGINES" wordmark and the brand's iconic "winged hourglass" logo are imprinted.
At its heart lies the Cal. 284, a masterpiece of a hand-wound movement designed and manufactured in-house by Longines. This movement is equipped with an eccentric screw fine-adjustment regulator, allowing for precise calibration of the balance wheel's rate—a reflection of the technological excellence from Longines' golden age, when precision was paramount. The movement is also attractively finished with artisanal touches such as gold chatons holding the jewels.
The crown is the original piece, featuring the "LONGINES" wordmark and "winged hourglass" logo, maintaining its originality down to the smallest detail.
This exquisite timepiece captures the sophisticated design and precise technology of the Swiss watch industry during its most brilliant era, before the Quartz Crisis.
Condition
This watch has been overhauled and externally refinished.
The leather strap has been replaced with a new one (by MORELLATO), ensuring it is ready for comfortable use.
The crystal has some minor scratches that could not be fully removed by polishing, but dial visibility remains good.
The dial has aged to a soft shade close to champagne gold, creating the wonderful atmosphere unique to vintage timepieces. The hands show some dullness and discoloration commensurate with age, but this blends with the texture of the dial to provide a deep, antique aesthetic.
As this is an old timepiece, it is not water-resistant. Use in wet environments (rainy days, while washing your face, or on hot days when you may sweat, etc.) is strictly prohibited.
As this is a precision instrument, please be careful to avoid drops and strong impacts. Also, keep the watch away from strong magnetic fields, such as smartphones, PCs, or magnetic bag clasps.
How to Operate
Hand-winding: With the crown in the normal position, rotate upwards (clockwise).
To wind the mainspring, please turn the crown upward slowly and carefully.
Winding will feel light at first, but will become heavier as the spring reaches capacity.
Please note that forcing the crown once the watch is fully wound may snap the mainspring.
Pulling the crown: Insert a fingernail between the case and the crown to gently pull it out.
To prevent bending the crown stem, please remove the watch from your wrist before operating.
Handling the crown gently helps reduce strain.
Setting the time: Pull the crown out and rotate downwards (counter-clockwise).
